Falmouth housebuilder’s £1,500 gift for older people charity

A cardboard cheque the size of a garden bench is not the usual way £1,500 changes hands, but it is how a Falmouth housebuilder chose to hand its latest donation to a charity that spends its days quietly keeping older people connected.

A £1,500 boost for isolated older people

Barratt Bristol, which is currently building at Pen Bethan on Hillhead Road in Falmouth, has donated £1,500 to Age UK Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly, a local charity that aims to change older age stigma.

For over 50 years, Age UK Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly has provided help and support to older people in the community by offering a range of activities and services focused on improving health and wellbeing. The charity offers a dedicated telephone line, community transport and events for older people.

Vouchers for 100 people

Through the donation, Barratt Bristol is supporting the charity’s voucher initiative, which provides money to socially isolated individuals in need. The contribution will help 100 people access essential household supplies and food.

Kim Carey, Chair of the Board of Age UK Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Barratt Bristol for this kind donation and for recognising the importance of accessible health and wellbeing support for older people within our local community.

“The grant funding has helped us set aside vouchers for up to 100 individuals in need of essential supplies and food. It is through donations like this that we can continue our work to ensure people have the care and support needed as they age.”

Part of a wider foundation

The donation is one of several initiatives supported by the Barratt Redrow Foundation, which focuses on creating lasting social value through volunteering, partnerships and grassroots support across the UK. Since its launch in 2021, the foundation has donated more than £20 million to more than 1,700 local and national charities.

New homes taking shape on Hillhead Road

The development includes a new children’s play area and 1.4 acres of biodiversity-enhanced landscaping, featuring over 100 new trees, 5,900 hedgerow saplings, and bee-friendly planting to support local wildlife.
