Former Mayor of Truro to Embark on 500-Mile Journey Around Cornwall in Electric Wheelchair to Raise Funds for Cornwall Air Ambulance

In just two weeks, one of Cornwall’s most prominent citizens, Steven Webb, will set off on an extraordinary 500-mile journey around the perimeter of Cornwall. This challenge, named The Cornwall 500, will see Steven become the first person to complete the route in an electric wheelchair, a monumental task that he has taken on to raise funds for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust (CAAT). The former Mayor of Truro, who has been paralysed since a life-altering diving accident in 1991, is aiming to raise £20,000 to support the charity that once saved his life.

A Life-Altering Event

On 1 September 1991, Steven’s life changed forever after a severe diving accident left him paralysed below the neck. The following day, when his condition deteriorated, the Cornwall Air Ambulance transported him to the Duke of Cornwall spinal unit, a journey that would prove vital to his survival. Now, 33 years later, Steven is determined to give back to the service that gave him a second chance at life. “That little red dot in the sky gives so much hope – not only for patients but also for their families,” Steven reflects, emphasising the importance of ensuring that the air ambulance can continue saving lives.

The Cornwall 500: More Than Just a Challenge

Leaving from Alverton Manor in Truro at 10 am on Sunday, 1 September, Steven plans to complete the 500-mile journey in just 20 days, covering up to 30 miles a day in his electric wheelchair. This will be no easy feat, as he will need to overcome not just his physical limitations but also the unpredictable Cornish terrain. “Being physically disabled is a small part of the daily living challenge,” says Steven. “It’s all the other limitations that life throws in the way. From the daily routine to relying on others and public services just to be able to live in a limited way.”

Steven’s journey is about more than just covering the distance; it’s about showcasing the collective effort of his carers, supporters, and everyone involved in making this challenge possible. “It takes two people over an hour just to get me out of bed in the morning,” Steven explains, highlighting the extensive support system that underpins his endeavour.

Raising Funds for a Vital Cause

Steven’s efforts come at a crucial time for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust. According to Tim Bunting, CEO of CAAT, the service has seen a significant increase in demand, with last year being 10% busier than 2022, and May 2024 marking the busiest month on record. The charity has raised over £1 million towards its £2.85 million goal for the #HELi2 campaign, which aims to fund a second helicopter for Cornwall. “It’s now that we need two aircraft in Cornwall to be able to save even more lives,” Tim says, expressing gratitude for Steven’s support.

Creating a Lasting Legacy

The Cornwall 500 is not just a test of endurance; it’s also an opportunity to promote accessibility and explore Cornwall’s rich history and culture. Steven will place the first 50 plaques along the route, each equipped with a scannable QR code that will allow future visitors to create their own bespoke adventures around Cornwall. “People will be able to do it in a weekend on a motorbike, take a week in a campervan, take a month on a bicycle, or spend a lifetime exploring it in their own accessible way,” says Clive Kessell, co-creator of The Cornwall 500.

The challenge is set to culminate on 28 September at Lemon Quay in Truro, where Steven is due to complete his journey around 2 pm. Along the way, he promises a series of surprises and exciting adventures, with details to be revealed daily through the Cornwall 500 social media channels.

How You Can Support

Steven’s challenge is poised to make a significant impact, both in raising crucial funds for the Cornwall Air Ambulance and in boosting the profile of The Cornwall 500. As Lord Lt. Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho, President of CAAT, notes, “We are all just a moment away from needing these life-saving services.”

To support Steven on his remarkable journey, donations can be made via his JustGiving page. Businesses can also get involved by sponsoring a QR Code Plaque, a day of the challenge, or offering other support services.

Steven Webb’s journey promises to be one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of his life, and as he prepares to set off, he leaves us with a simple sentiment: “It really is going to be a journey of a lifetime, and I can’t wait to get started.”
