On Thursday, 25th September, St Michael’s Church in Newquay became the stage for an extraordinary blend of art and surf culture. Forty-three uniquely hand-decorated belly boards went under the hammer in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care, raising over £26,500.

The event, titled Where Art Meets The Wave, was sponsored by Rodda’s and featured boards specially crafted for the project by Fyne Boat Kits of Kendal and Derek Thompson of Surf Classic Boards.

Artists and Auction Highlights

The boards were decorated by 43 artists, including renowned names such as top seller Kurt Jackson and Instagram favourite Steve Camps. Kurt’s creation was the star of the evening, attracting the highest bid at £3,860.

The finale was compered by Bradley Start and facilitated by Lay’s Auctioneers of Penzance, ensuring a smooth conclusion to the successful fundraiser.

Decades of Dedication

The driving force behind the event was volunteer Sue Dennett, who has been fundraising for Cornwall Hospice Care for 40 years. Sue previously led the successful ‘38 Churns Project’ in 2022.

Sue said:

“It has been a privilege to work with Cornwall’s amazing artists who, like me, are passionate and proud of Cornwall’s two Hospices. I am truly grateful to all who were involved in the success of the project.”

Community Spirit Shines

Ben Statham-Wilkins, Head of Brand & Marketing at Cornwall Hospice Care, added:

“Once again, we’re blown away by the generosity of our amazing Cornish community. The art on display today was of such an outstanding standard and so varied in style, it’s been a real privilege to see it all brought together in one place. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Sue Dennett, whose energy and commitment have made this event such a success, and to the 43 artists who kindly donated their work to support the vital care we provide at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle and Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell.”

Supporting Vital Care

The funds raised will directly support patients and families at Cornwall Hospice Care during some of their most difficult times. Alongside the auction, the evening offered an opportunity for artists to connect with the public and share the stories behind their boards, adding a personal touch to the night.
