Truro City have confirmed that Ben Adelsbury has retired from football and will leave the club following Friday’s game against Yeovil Town.

The 35 year old has taken the decision to step away in order to spend more time with his family, bringing an end to a career that included multiple promotions with Truro City.

A Career Spanning Three Spells at Truro

Born in Cumbria and raised in the South West, Ben came through the ranks at Swansea City before going on to represent Truro City on three separate occasions.

Away from Cornwall, his career also included spells at Eastbourne Borough, Bath City and Taunton Town, where he also achieved promotion success with the Peacocks.

Key Role in Truro’s Rise

Rejoining Truro City for the 2022 to 23 season, Ben became a mainstay in the side that won the Southern League play offs. He also played a part in helping the club retain their Step Two status while operating as a nomadic team.

Last season saw him play an important role, both on and off the pitch, as Truro City secured the National League South title, the highest level the club has ever competed at.

Speaking to trurocity.co.uk, Ben reflected on his time with the club.

“I have had some special times with some special people,” he said. “I arrived as a player and leave as a fan and it is amazing to see where the club was two or three years ago to where it finds itself now.

“I’d like to thank the fans for all their support during my times at the football club and within the playing group are some special characters. That’s what makes the football club a special place to be.”

Why the Time Felt Right

With just one substitute appearance this season, and a successful career outside of football, Ben explained why now felt like the right moment to retire.

“When the club transitioned to hybrid and part time to full time, at the start of this season, I was never going to be able to commit,” he said.

“I have a young family and a career away from football so I’m very comfortable with the decision I’ve come to. It feels like the right time personally to spend a little more time with my family and to be a fan watching the boys.”

Moments That Will Be Remembered

Asked about his favourite memories in a Truro shirt, two moments stood out. The play off final victory over Bracknell Town in May 2023 and last season’s title clinching match against St Albans.

“The scenes we had in the last game of the season, being 3-0 up before Torquay had kicked off, were amazing,” he said.

“For me to be on the bench and play a small part last season was certainly a career highlight. We can go across the whole of last season and find special moments, but the celebrations at the end and the open top bus parade we had in the following weeks were special times.

“When I came back this time I signed under Paul Wotton, we were ground sharing with Plymouth Parkway and that was a difficult period for the club.

“We were playing in front of 70 fans but Paul was great as a manager and we had a great team ethos.

“We got promotion that season with more special moments, which included Connor Riley Lowe popping up at the end to win the play offs at Bracknell.”

Looking Ahead

With his playing days almost over, Ben is now looking forward to watching his son Theo, who has recently joined the academy set up at Torquay United.

There was also a light hearted message for his wife Nia.

“I get a lot of enjoyment watching Theo play and football is my DNA, so I’ve already told my wife not to sign me up for B&Q at 3.00pm on a Saturday because I will be getting my football fix somewhere.”

Truro City have thanked Ben for his service to the club and confirmed he will always be welcome back at the TCS.
