Conservatives Eye Opposition Role as Reform Cornwall Shrinks

Published On: 22 May 2026Last Updated: 22 May 2026By

The Conservatives think they can see a path to becoming the official Opposition at Cornwall Council before the next election. And it is Reform UK’s own troubles handing them the opportunity.

This week saw the seventh Reform UK councillor leave the group, with Jamie Hanlon confirming he will now sit as an Independent. That drops Reform UK from 28 members to 21, a loss of 25% of its elected councillors in just over a year.

A standing joke at County Hall

The steady drip of departures has become a recurring feature of council business, and the Conservatives are happy to point it out.

Councillor Martyn Alvey, Deputy Leader of the Conservatives on Cornwall Council, said: “We seem to be revisiting committee seat allocations at almost every Full Council meeting. Slightly tongue in cheek, if this continues at the current rate, the Conservatives could become the formal Opposition before the Council is re-elected in 2029.”

“Splintering, bickering and fighting”

Conservative Councillor Rob Parsonage, who left the Reform Group himself last year, drew a sharp line between the two parties.

“While Reform UK has been splintering, bickering and fighting amongst itself, the Conservatives have been getting on with the job of constructive opposition,” Rob said.

He pointed to a run of what he framed as Conservative wins. “We secured free travel support for elderly residents, we forced the Council into a U-turn on chemical weed killers, and we have consistently challenged the administration on behalf of residents across Cornwall.”

Rob also had warm words for the departing councillor. “Cllr Hanlon has brought a valuable and highly effective skill set to Cornwall Council, delivering improvements across the Council’s estate. I have no doubt Jamie will continue that work as an Independent councillor, and he will be a significant loss to Reform UK.”

Who holds the administration to account?

The Conservative argument rests on a claim about the health of local democracy: that a strong and effective Opposition is essential for scrutinising decisions, challenging poor policy, and holding the administration to account.

On the Conservatives’ telling, they are now the only group consistently providing that constructive challenge and meaningful scrutiny of the Liberal Democrat and Independent administration at Cornwall Council.
