Why a Falmouth and Saltash housebuilder backed a Gloucester hospice

A cheque for £30,560.28 is not a small thing to hold up for a photo, and it took three people to manage it in a hospice garden that Barratt Bristol staff had spent the day helping to bring back to life. The housebuilder, currently building at Pen Bethan in Falmouth and Treledan in Saltash, has spent the past year fundraising and volunteering for a children’s hospice more than 150 miles from either site, and is now turning its attention to a charity with a base rather closer to home.

Weeding, jet-washing and a 26-mile walk

The Cornwall housebuilder has supported James Hopkins Trust as its charity of the year since August 2025, raising a total of £30,560.28 through fundraising and voluntary work. Nine members of the Barratt Bristol team recently spent a day restoring the hospice’s sensory and memorial gardens, cleaning the outdoor play equipment, clearing weeds, cutting the grass and finishing with a jet wash of the patio.

Alongside the hands-on work, the team has hosted fundraising events including a walk along the Tarka Trail, a 26-mile route in Barnstaple.

A hospice built for Gloucestershire’s children

James Hopkins Trust opened its Kites Corner site in 2003 to provide nursing respite for life-limited and life-threatened young children in Gloucestershire.

Laura Brooker, a fundraiser at James Hopkins Trust, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to Barratt Bristol for their support over the past year and their generous donation of £30,560.28 which has been hugely appreciated by the whole charity.

“We would also like to thank the team for their time spent volunteering with us here at Kite’s Corner to help maintain our sensory garden and create an area where our children can enjoy being outside and playing safely.

“Donations such as this allow us to continue our vital work of supporting infants and children that live with life-limiting or threatening conditions and their families. Thank you, Barratt Bristol!”

The next charity is closer to home

Barratt Bristol has now pledged its support to Children’s Hospice South West for the year ahead, a charity providing hospice care for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions across the region, alongside support for their families. Its three hospices include Little Harbour in Cornwall, which cares for children from across the county.

Andrew Spicer, Managing Director of Barratt Bristol, said: “Supporting local charities is a key part of what we do at Barratt Bristol, and we’re incredibly proud to have raised such a fantastic amount for James Hopkins Trust over the past year.

“James Hopkins Trust plays a truly vital role within the Gloucestershire community, providing invaluable care and support to children and their families. We’re delighted to have been able to lend a hand and contribute to the important services they provide.

“Looking ahead, we look forward to our partnership with Children’s Hospice South West this upcoming year and supporting the incredible work they do across the region.”

Barratt Bristol’s current developments in Cornwall are Pen Bethan in Falmouth and Treledan in Saltash.
