Penlee lifeboat stood down a mile from Loe Bar callout

A family day by the water at Loe Bar turned into a coastguard alert on Sunday afternoon, with an inshore lifeboat already tearing across Mount’s Bay before the picture became clear.

The call

Penlee RNLI was tasked by Falmouth Coastguard at 3:15pm on 3 August 2026 after concerns were raised about a family at Loe Bar. Two of the family members were in the water.

Penlee’s inshore lifeboat, the Mollie and Ivor Dent, launched under the command of Helm James Roberts with three RNLI volunteers on board. The crew was making best speed across Mount’s Bay towards the scene.

Stood down a mile short

The lifeboat had almost reached Loe Bar, roughly a mile out, when the message came through to stand down.

Porthleven Coastguard Team had reached the family on the shore and spoken to them. All was well. With help already on scene and no one in difficulty, there was no need for the lifeboat to press on.

James Roberts turned the Mollie and Ivor Dent for home. The crew took her back to Newlyn, where the boat was washed down and prepared for the next call.
