Helston car park charges petition needs a push before September
Sign this, share that, scan the code. It has become a familiar routine outside Helston Fairground Car Park in recent weeks, as a campaign against the site’s new parking charges tries to find the thousands of signatures it still needs before a September deadline.

What the petition is asking for
The petition, titled "Help us protect Helston Fairground Car Park & make sure our community’s voice is heard," calls on Cornwall Council to bring the issue of charging at the car park before a Full Council meeting in September, for what its organisers describe as an open and transparent debate involving residents, businesses and councillors.
It was started by Craig Scott on 24 July and has passed 2,890 verified signatures, with organisers hoping to reach 5,000. Under Cornwall Council’s own Petition Scheme, a petition reaching that number on a Cornwall-wide issue can be considered for debate at Full Council. The petition notes that a previous attempt on the same issue came close to the threshold but fell short, and with the September date in mind, the window to add a name is limited.

The concerns being raised
The petition’s organisers say local businesses are reporting reduced footfall since the charges began, and that residents are experiencing increased parking pressure on streets around the car park as drivers look for a free space instead. They also raise concerns for people with health conditions or mobility issues, who they say are finding it harder to access the area now that the car park is no longer free to use.
Cornwall Council has said it will review the situation, but the petition’s organisers argue the town should not have to wait months for that review while the impact continues to be felt.
The petition is also explicit on one point. It states that vandalism and criminal damage are not the answer, warning that damaging ticket machines or council property "only distracts from the real issue & risks undermining the genuine concerns of thousands of residents." It frames the campaign instead as a democratic one, built on signatures rather than direct action.
Where Helston Town Council stands
Helston Town Council says it previously took the decision not to support the introduction of charging at the Fairground Car Park, and that this remains its position. The town council says it hopes Cornwall Council will review its decision, and has shared the petition with residents through its own channels.
The petition itself makes a point of widening who it wants to hear from. Organisers say people do not need to live in Helston or use the car park daily to add their name, and that anyone who shops, works, visits family, attends events or supports local businesses in the town has a stake in the outcome.

Building the evidence
Alongside the petition, organisers are gathering first-hand accounts of how the charges have affected people. Anyone who has been unable to park, seen fewer customers, or been displaced onto surrounding streets is being asked to send their experiences to [email protected], to help build a picture of the charges’ real-world impact ahead of any debate.
Whether that debate happens at all now comes down to a number. With the deadline approaching and the last attempt having come so close, organisers are making one more push to get Helston’s case in front of the full council chamber before September closes the door.
