Envelopes were torn open along the fence outside The Roseland Academy this morning, and within seconds the smiles were spreading from one small group to the next. Two years of coursework, mock exams and after-school revision came down to a single sheet of paper for every student in the Class of 2026.

The school in Tregony has posted GCSE results above the national average once again, a run of form staff put down to hundreds of hours of lessons, targeted support, Champions Hours and revision sessions run through weekends and school holidays.

Pupils are heading off in every direction from here, from sixth form colleges across Cornwall to apprenticeships, further training and jobs, each one closing a chapter that began back in Year 7.

The year’s top of the class

Reuben led the way with six Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and three Grade 7s, one of the strongest results sheets the school has produced in years. George was close behind with five Grade 9s, a Grade 8 and three Grade 7s, and Daniel collected three Grade 9s, four Grade 8s, three Grade 7s and a Grade 6.

Ysella finished with two Grade 9s, four Grade 8s and four Grade 7s, and Isabelle added a Grade 9, two Grade 8s and three Grade 7s to a results sheet she can be proud of. They were far from alone. Archie, Ben, Eleanor, Olly, Max, Oscar, Pippa and Rufus were among the other students posting some of the highest point scores across the year group.

Where the Class of 2026 are heading

Results day marks the fork in the road for Year 11, and this year’s cohort are scattering in plenty of directions. Truro College, Callywith College, Duchy College and St Austell College all feature among the destinations, alongside apprenticeships, further training and employment.

A few are heading further afield for something more specialist. Oscar continues his education at Exeter College of Maths, Ted is off to Bristol to join the American Football Academy there, and Seb is heading to Hartpury College to focus on his rugby development.

“Immensely proud”: staff pay tribute

Headteacher Richard Clarke said today was about celebrating what the students had achieved, and recognising just how much work had gone into getting them there.

“We know that every student has had a different journey through Year 11,” he said. “For some, achieving exceptional grades has been the result of extraordinary academic commitment. For others, achieving the grades they needed to move on to their chosen destination represents a huge personal achievement.”

“The commitment from our students has been fantastic. Our staff have worked tirelessly alongside them, providing targeted support, Champions Hours, revision sessions at weekends and during the holidays, and, of course, enough pizza to keep everyone going.”

Emma Atkins-Gammons, Learning Leader for Year 11, said it had been a privilege to work with the year group. “We have seen students face challenges throughout their secondary education and continue to push themselves, accept support and keep going when things have been difficult,” she said. “Today is the reward for that effort. I am delighted that so many students have secured the grades they need for their chosen next steps, and I am incredibly proud of them all. I wish every one of them the very best for the future.”

Richard Clarke said it had been wonderful to see so many excited students that morning, some finding they had done exactly what they were hoping for, others discovering they had done even better than expected.

“We wish every member of the Class of 2026 a fantastic rest of their summer and every success for the future,” he said. “They should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved, and we hope that they look back on their time at The Roseland with pride and fondness.”
