It has been 42 years since the British Championship for Formula Two Stock Cars was settled on Cornish soil. On Saturday 20 June it lands at United Downs Raceway, St Day, a circuit that has never staged the event before.

The last time the British title was contested in Cornwall was 1984, when Mike James took the win at the now defunct Cornish Stadium in St Austell. It is also the biggest Stock Car event the county has seen since 2019, when United Downs hosted the World Championship Semi Finals.

What the promoters are saying

Crispen Rosevear, one of the co-promoters at United Downs Raceway, traced the event back to the years when the circuit’s future was in doubt. He said the loyalty shown by racegoers in 2021 and 2022, when the raceway was under serious threat, was something the promoters always wanted to repay by bringing high profile events to St Day.

“The title of British Champion is highly coveted,” he said. “It is extremely prestigious within the Stock Car racing community, and this year, one driver is going to claim that honour by winning the title right here in Cornwall.”

A series of qualifying heats will set the grid for the main event. Crispen promised racing that would be intense and spectacular, with the winner having earned it.

The Formula Two field

The BriSCA F2 Stock Cars make their third St Day appearance of the season, and this one draws a heavy travelling contingent alongside the westcountry regulars. World Champion Gordon Moodie comes down from Kennoway in Fife, and newly crowned European Champion Charlie Guinchard travels from Cheshunt.

The reigning British Champion is Tommy Farrell of Plymouth, who took the title at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland in June 2025. That came 19 years after his father, Timmy Farrell, won the same championship.

The last Cornish driver to lift the British crown was Steven Gilbert in 2019. Now based in Launceston, Steven will be banking on home track knowledge to help him regain it. Kieren Bradford of Liskeard, Ben Borthwick of Dobwalls and Charlie Lobb of Wadebridge will be looking to do the same on familiar ground.

Each driver gets three qualifying heats. The points are added up, and the top scorer takes pole position for the British Championship.

2 Litre National Bangers

The 2 Litre National Bangers return to St Day for the first time since February, and they tend to deliver plenty of hard hitting and entertaining crashing.

Nick Blight and Cody Blight of Bodmin both feature. The brothers usually race in the Bangers but are stepping into the National Bangers, where heavier crashing is encouraged. Another Bodmin youngster, Macauley Haines, is making the same step up.

Reigning World Champion Johnny James of Ideford, near Newton Abbot, headlines the entry. His brother Jayden James joins him, sitting top of the Entertainers’ League table after a season of spectacular displays.

Ministox

The Ministox class is where the young racers learn the trade, with drivers aged between 11 and 16. When the juniors were last at St Day, Lexi Crosbie of Stithians won the Snell Family Trophy for her second race win of the season.

Caravan Chaos to close

The day ends with the Caravan Chaos Challenge, where half a dozen caravans are towed to destruction in a contest that always goes down well with family crowds.

Racing starts at 1pm on Saturday 20 June at United Downs Raceway, St Day.
