Somebody knows the exact number. It is stitched into every petal of a floor-length red gown standing in the middle of a Truro market hall, and for £1 you can have a go at guessing it.

The poppy dress has gone on display at Truro Pannier Market, raising money for the Royal British Legion in the run-up to Remembrance.

A dress made from hundreds of handmade poppies

The gown is built from knitted and crocheted poppies, from the sweetheart neckline right down to a long train that spills across a bed of green. More poppies hang above it, strung in garlands across the walkway and gathered into great red domes beneath the skylight.

Truro BID has praised Stitches Truro, based in the Pannier Market, along with everyone who knitted and crocheted poppies to help create the display.

Guess the number of poppies

The market is running a competition asking visitors to guess how many poppies went into the Pannier Market Poppy Dress display. The prize is a hamper from the Pannier Market worth £200.

Each entry costs £1, with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

How to enter

  • Enter online through the Truro Pannier Market website, or scan the QR code on the stand by the dress.
  • In person, pick up an entry form from the Martin’s Bakery counter and fill in your details.
  • Wrap the form around your entry fee (minimum £1) and post it in the locked entry box next to the display.

The competition runs until the end of November, and the winner will be announced the week after it closes.

For anyone just passing through Truro, the market’s message is simple. Pop in and see the poppies. A small plaque at the foot of the dress carries the familiar lines: “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”
