End of an Era: Falmouth RNLI Bids Farewell to Lifeboat After 23 Years of Service

Published On: 1 February 2025Last Updated: 1 February 2025By

On Friday 31st January, Falmouth RNLI’s Severn class lifeboat Richard Cox Scott departed for the final time after reaching the end of its operational life. The lifeboat’s departure was marked by a flotilla of working and recreational vessels escorting it out of the harbour, offering the community a chance to say their goodbyes from various viewing locations.

Lifesaving Coverage Continues

Despite the departure of Richard Cox Scott, the RNLI has ensured that all lifesaving areas remain fully covered. The surrounding lifeboat stations remain on service and ready to respond to emergencies, including the Penlee all-weather lifeboat, which joined the flotilla at Falmouth. The Penlee RNLI inshore lifeboat, Sennen Cove’s all-weather and inshore lifeboats, and St Mary’s all-weather lifeboat also stand ready to launch if needed.

All vessels taking part in the flotilla remained afloat throughout the farewell, ensuring they could respond to any incidents at sea. The RNLI carefully planned and dynamically assessed the weather and sea conditions to maintain the continuation of its lifesaving service.

A Historic Tradition

Lifeboat flotillas have been a longstanding RNLI tradition, dating back to the early 20th century. The event allowed stations involved to stand in solidarity with the Falmouth RNLI team as they bid farewell to Richard Cox Scott. The vessel served for 23 years in line with the RNLI’s core mission—saving lives at sea.
