NHS Cornwall Shares Back-to-School Health Advice for Parents and Carers
As children across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly return to their classrooms this week, NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly has shared simple health advice to help families stay well and avoid unnecessary time off school.
The start of a new school year can bring excitement, but also the return of common concerns such as coughs, colds, head lice and threadworms. By spotting symptoms quickly and taking steps at home, parents and carers can help reduce the spread.
Common Health Concerns
The NHS says coughs, colds and sore throats spread easily at school. Regular handwashing, catching coughs and sneezes in tissues, and resting at home when unwell are the best defences.
Head lice are another frequent issue in school-aged children. Parents are encouraged to check hair regularly, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. A fine-toothed comb on wet hair is the most effective way to remove both lice and eggs.
Threadworms can also appear, with itching around the bottom at night being the main sign. They are easily treated with medicines available from pharmacies, and handwashing is key to stopping them spreading again.
Healthy Habits at Home
The NHS recommends building routines that help children thrive in school. This includes getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and staying active to boost concentration and wellbeing.
Handwashing remains one of the most effective ways to stop germs spreading. Parents are advised to make it a fun and regular habit, especially before meals, after using the toilet, and after playing outside.
Knowing When to Stay Off School

Reassurance from NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly
NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Chris Reid, said:
“Starting a new school year is a special milestone for children and families, and we’d like to wish every child the very best as they return to their classrooms.
“We also want to reassure parents and carers that many common health concerns, such as head lice or threadworms, are very normal and easily managed. Taking simple steps will help keep children happy, healthy, and ready to learn.”
