Church Hall on St Mary’s to Undergo Accessibility and Energy Efficiency Upgrades
A major renovation is set to breathe new life into the Church Hall on St Mary’s, thanks to £26,340 in funding from Cornwall Council’s Community Levelling Up Programme (CLUP), part of the Good Growth Programme delivering the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Making the Hall Accessible for Everyone
The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of the Ecclesiastical Parish of the Isles of Scilly has confirmed that work will soon begin on the transformative upgrades. The Church Hall, which serves as a vital standalone community hub, already hosts a range of activities including a community café, lunches, a bowling club and a girl guide unit.
However, the building’s lack of step-free access has long posed a challenge for many residents, including wheelchair users, people with mobility aids and parents with pushchairs.
Keith Grossett, Head of Economy and Procurement for the Council of the Isles of Scilly, said: “The funding panel were pleased to be able to support the Church Hall renovation bid, as this project will remove barriers to participation for a wide range of users.”
Key Improvements Ahead
With the funding secured, the PCC plans to carry out significant work to make the space fully accessible and more energy efficient. Planned improvements include:
-
Widening the building’s access points
-
Installing a permanent ramp for step-free entry
-
Replacing the entrance door for improved accessibility
-
Fitting a new kitchen to better serve community groups
-
Upgrading windows and doors to enhance energy efficiency
A Welcoming Space for All
The upgrades will help make the hall more inclusive while increasing its usage through additional bookings and community events. The improved facilities will also open up opportunities for the Church Hall to be used as an affordable venue for weddings and special occasions.
The Rev’d Elizabeth Burke, Chaplain and incumbent for the Isles of Scilly, said: “This project is about more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about creating a space where everyone in our community feels welcome and included.”
