Strong Winds Set to Hit Cornwall on Tuesday Morning

Published On: 19 January 2026Last Updated: 19 January 2026By

A yellow weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office, covering the period from 4am to 4pm on Tuesday 20th January.

The warning highlights the potential for disruption, particularly to travel, as strong and gusty south easterly winds move through the area.

What to Expect

The Met Office says some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely. Bus and train services may be affected, with some journeys taking longer than usual. High sided vehicles could face delays on exposed routes and bridges.

There is also the possibility of short term power cuts and disruption to other services.

Along the coast, some routes, sea fronts and coastal communities are likely to be affected by spray and large waves.

Wind and Rain Details

South easterly winds are expected to strengthen during Tuesday morning, especially over and to the northwest of high ground. Gusts of 45 to 50mph are likely in these areas.

A band of heavy rain is forecast to reach the Isles of Scilly before dawn, moving east through the day. This rain band will be accompanied by inland wind gusts of 45 to 55mph, with the potential for 60 to 65mph gusts over the most exposed hills and coasts.

The winds are expected to ease once the band of rain clears.

Advice from the Met Office

People planning to travel are advised to check road conditions or bus and train timetables and adjust plans if needed to avoid delays.

The Met Office also notes that people cope better with power cuts when they prepare in advance. This includes gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

Those on the coast are urged to stay safe during stormy conditions. Large breaking waves can be dangerous even from the shore, with the risk of being swept off feet and into the sea. Care is advised when walking near cliffs, with routes planned in advance and dogs kept on a lead. In an emergency, people should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

The Met Office advises staying up to date with the latest forecasts, as weather warnings can change quickly.

Why the Warning Is Yellow

The warning has been issued due to a medium likelihood of the conditions occurring, with a low overall impact expected.
