Money Seized From Criminals Used to Support Porthleven Women’s Craft Group
Money seized from criminals is being put to positive use in Porthleven, after £500 was awarded to support a local women’s craft group.
The funding was handed over by the local neighbourhood policing team using money from the Proceeds of Crime Act fund.
Support for a local craft group
The money has been awarded to the Women’s Institute Craft Group, which provides a safe and inclusive space for women to build skills, confidence and social connections.
The funding has been used to purchase new sewing machines and other essential equipment, helping the group continue its activities in the community.
Police Community Support Officer Julia Berry said:
“Projects like this play an important role in strengthening communities, reducing isolation and supporting wellbeing.
This club has been running for a number of years at the heart of the community, providing a wonderful social space for women of all ages to come together to learn and develop their crafting skills.
I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to support the group.”
‘This equipment will make a real difference’
Wendy Harris, President of Porthleven Women’s Institute, thanked police for the award.
She said:
“On behalf of everyone at Porthleven Women’s Institute, I would like to thank Devon & Cornwall Police for this generous award.
Knowing that money recovered from crime is now being used to benefit our local community makes it even more special. This equipment will make a real difference to our Craft Group and help us continue to grow and inspire others.”
Craft Group leaders Sandra and Linzie added:
“This funding means we can expand our projects and offer more opportunities for our members to learn new skills and work together on creative community activities. We are so grateful for this support.”
How POCA funding works
Money in the POCA fund is seized from convicted criminals who have financially benefited from crime. The funds are then reinvested into communities to support local causes that have a positive impact on local people.
