St Agnes and Perranporth Residents Asked for Views on 20mph Speed Limits
Cornwall Council is asking people to share their views on proposed 20mph speed limits across the St Agnes and Perranporth Community Network Area, with a public consultation now open.
The proposals form part of the council’s wider countywide roll out of 20mph limits on most residential streets, following what it says has been strong local support in other areas.
What is being proposed
According to Cornwall Council, a 20mph speed limit would be introduced on the majority of residential roads within the network area. In some locations, buffer zones would also be added on the approach to these streets.
Maps showing the proposed changes are available as part of the consultation, allowing residents to see which roads would be affected.
Why the changes are being considered
The council says lower speed limits are intended to make streets safer, particularly for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users. The plans support its Vision Zero goal, which focuses on working towards the elimination of fatal and serious injuries on Cornwall’s roads.
Cornwall Council also points to wider benefits, including reduced traffic noise, improved air quality, and encouraging more walking and cycling for local journeys. It says slower speeds can help create more sociable streets, support local businesses, and improve access to community facilities.
Concerns raised about specific roads
Not everyone is convinced by all aspects of the proposals. One comment, shared by Emile, highlights concerns about a stretch of road leading down into a village:
“In case anyone has missed it on this map, the proposal includes keeping a national speed limit section on the road down to the village
This means there would be a national speed limit sign half way down coast road.
Driving down the hill you’d go up to 60mph, immediately go into a width restriction, past a hidden driveway, round a bend on the edge of the cliff above the village and then into a 40 zone at the bottom of the hill just in time for 3 driveways and 2 junctions.
Great planning Cornwall Council 👌”
The consultation also includes a comments box, which some residents have noted is an opportunity to raise concerns about areas such as routes used by children walking to school bus stops where there are no footpaths.
How to take part
People can view the proposed changes and complete the survey by visiting the consultation page on the Cornwall Council website. Details of the legal Traffic Orders are also available through the Appyway platform, linked from the same page.
More information about 20mph speed limits, including costs and the council’s overall approach, can be found on the Cornwall Council website.
Once the consultation closes, all feedback will be reviewed before a decision is made on how to move forward.
