New Book Something Brewing in Cornwall by Tommy Barnes Set in Padstow

A new book set in Padstow is putting a spotlight on life in Cornwall, as author Tommy Barnes shares his experience of starting over on the North Coast.

Something Brewing in Cornwall follows Tommy Barnes and his family after their return from France, as they adjust to life in a cramped cottage in Padstow and attempt to rebuild both their business and their lives.

From French Dream to Cornish Reality

Tommy Barnes, who previously found success with A Beer in the Loire and Trouble Brewing in the Loire, built a following as the “accidental brewer” after swapping London life for a French farmhouse and starting a microbrewery.

But this latest book picks up after that dream unravels.

Following the impact of Covid, Tommy Barnes and his family made the difficult decision to return to England. They settled in a cramped cottage in Padstow, with their children adjusting to the move and their animals needing to be rehomed.

The transition, as described in the book, is far from straightforward. Tommy reflects on the loss of his life in rural France while navigating a series of career setbacks, including time spent at St Austell Brewery.

A Story of Starting Over

The book charts Tommy’s realisation that the challenges he faced were not just down to circumstance. With support from friends and an unexpected connection with a rival brewer, he begins working towards relaunching his microbrewery, Braslou Bière, this time in Cornwall.

Along the way, readers are introduced to a mix of characters, from fellow brewers and fishermen to antique dealers and a Brazilian surfer. There is also Burt, described as an indestructible dog, who becomes a memorable part of the story.

The narrative follows both the practical and emotional sides of starting again, including the realities of building a business in Cornwall and the contrast between its polished image and everyday life.

Set against the backdrop of North Cornwall, the book explores the local craft beer scene, including the process of brewing, experimenting with hop varieties, and developing recipes.

Tommy Barnes also documents the relaunch of Braslou Bière and the creation of Surfer Beer, sharing both the successes and the setbacks that come with it.

The book blends travel writing, memoir and food and drink, offering an insight into the independent brewing community and the challenges of returning to a changed Britain after years abroad.
