Falmouth Week fireworks cancelled as tinder-dry ground raises risk

The weeks of heat that have baked Cornwall have taken one of Falmouth Week’s biggest nights with them. The Friday fireworks display, the moment when crowds usually pack the Falmouth waterfront to watch the sky light up over the harbour, will not go ahead this year.

Why the display has been called off

Organisers behind Falmouth Week confirmed the display set for Friday 14 August has been cancelled after weeks without rain left the ground tinder dry. With another heatwave forecast, the fire risk was judged too great to light the sky above the town.

The Falmouth Town Team said it had worked through the options with its partners, including Celebration Pyrotechnics, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Falmouth Harbour, Balaena and local landowners. After a careful assessment, none of the alternatives met the requirements needed to run the display safely.

Richard Gates, Falmouth Week Shoreside Committee Chair, said the decision was not taken lightly. “We know how much this display means to people, and we don’t take this decision lightly. We’ve spent many hours looking at every alternative with our partners but with the ground this dry, the risks are too high and safety has to come first, and that unfortunately means the display can’t go ahead this year.”

The rest of Friday still goes ahead

Losing the fireworks does not close the day. The rest of Friday 14 August’s entertainment will run as planned, and Falmouth Week itself continues through to Sunday 16 August. The full line-up is in the Falmouth Week digital programme.

For a display that draws thousands to the water’s edge every August, it is a hard call. Richard put the reason plainly. With the ground this dry, safety came first.
