The lights are gone from Mevagissey’s new community garden

It had only just started to look right. After dark, the bollards and chain fencing along the Cornerways and Valley Road garden area glowed red and blue, a small, cheerful touch on a stretch of Mevagissey that volunteers had put hours into turning around. Now some of those lights are gone, torn from their fittings, and the parish council wants to know who took them.

A garden built on volunteer hours

Mevagissey Parish Council had only recently shared how far the Cornerways and Valley Road garden area had come. The council says the transformation relied on “many many hours” from the local community and volunteers, all aimed at making the space “beautiful and welcoming” for the village.

That achievement is now the backdrop to a very different kind of post. Confirming the lights had been “vandalised and stolen”, the council said the reaction from everyone involved ran to rather more beeping and exclaiming than it felt able to repeat on Facebook.

What’s missing

On one of the bollards along Valley Road, only a hose clamp and its mounting bracket remain. The light itself, along with its bracket clip, has been pulled free completely, leaving bare metal and a scattering of cobwebs where it used to sit.

What’s still standing

Not every light has gone. Further along the same run of chain fencing, the solar units are still doing their job, casting red and blue over the grass after dark, a reminder of what the whole display looked like before somebody started taking pieces of it.
