The 50p charge coming to Newquay’s Esplanade toilets

Reaching for loose change out of habit whenever you use a public toilet on Newquay‘s seafront? From next month you’ll actually need it.

What’s changing, and when

Newquay Town Council has confirmed that a 50p usage charge will be introduced at the Esplanade Toilets from Wednesday 1 October 2026. The move brings the facility in line with the charging structure already used across most of the town’s other public conveniences.

How you’ll pay

Payment will be taken through a contactless system. The accessible toilet gets its own combined unit, accepting both contactless payment and coins, so cash isn’t ruled out entirely if that’s your preference.

Contractors are currently fitting the new payment units at the Esplanade site. Newquay Town Council says the toilets are staying open throughout, with work being carried out in a way that keeps disruption to visitors to a minimum.

Why the council is bringing in the charge

The council points to rising maintenance costs across its public conveniences, driven largely by misuse and vandalism. Introducing a charge is intended to help cover those costs and, the council says, to discourage the kind of inappropriate behaviour that has been driving the bill up in the first place.

“Introducing this system reflects the standard charging structure already in place across the majority of public conveniences in the town,” the council said, adding that the change should help keep facilities “safe, clean and well-managed” for everyone who uses them.
