A week by the sea in Porth for the price of a £5 ticket. And whoever wins it, a family who has lost a child benefits too.

Newquay care provider Carers Break CIC has teamed up with Charlie’s Star, a Cornish charity that gives bereaved families a week away, and two seven-night holidays at the charity’s static caravan are now heading for a raffle.

Two holidays bought, then given away again

In September 2026, Carers Break CIC bought two separate seven-night stays at Charlie’s Star‘s luxury static caravan at Newquay Bay Resort in Porth. It was part of the community interest company’s annual social gifting programme.

The first week, starting on 1 May 2027, was auctioned at the Cornwall Heroes Awards at Tregenna Castle on Friday 30 October. It raised £442.39 for the charity.

Then the winner handed the holiday straight back to Carers Break, so it could go into a raffle alongside the second week.

The idea is that Charlie’s Star benefits twice. Once when the holidays were bought, and again from the money the auction and raffles bring in.

How to enter the raffle

Each holiday has its own raffle, with the two weeks starting on 1 May 2027 and 29 May 2027.

  • Tickets are £5 each, per holiday raffle.
  • They will be on sale online and in person between 1 December 2026 and 31 January 2027.
  • Online tickets are sold through Zeffy on the Carers Break website, and will also be shared in Carers Break social media posts and emails.
  • Paper tickets are available from Carers Break staff, and are recorded on the same system.
  • The winning tickets will be picked by an online randomiser.

Each winner can take the holiday themselves with up to six people, or give it to someone who would benefit from time away. All proceeds go to Charlie’s Star.

Why Charlie’s Star

Baz Burns and Jan Burns set up Charlie’s Star in 2019 after their son Charlie died suddenly and unexpectedly at just 10 years old.

The charity offers fully funded seven-night respite breaks to families who have lost a child under 19, giving them time and space to make new memories, reflect and begin to heal.

Carers Break, a Cornish care provider, said it wanted to back a cause that matches its own values of compassion, wellbeing and community care.

Reuben Jenkins, Director of Carers Break CIC, said: “We understand the pain and unimaginable loss people experience when they lose those closest to them, and it is our privilege to support Charlie’s Star, who support those who suffer the worst loss of all, the loss of a child.”

Once the raffles close, Carers Break says it will publish full reports on the result of the campaign.
