Otterham pupils perform in Truro

Pupils from Years 5 and 6 at Otterham Community Primary School took part in the Cornwall Regional Festival on Friday, confidently performing on stage as part of the Music for Youth Festival series.

The Cornwall event took place at Truro Methodist Church and brought together young people from across the region to share and celebrate their musical talents.

The Music for Youth Festival series is the UK’s largest festival for young musicians, with events held in more than 20 locations around the country.

A performance using Makaton

During the festival, Otterham pupils performed A Thousand Years by Christina Perri. Their performance also included Makaton, using signs based on gestures used in British Sign Language to support the song.

Neave, a Year 5 pupil at the school, said:
“It was scary to begin with but at the end I felt great!”

Ethan, a Year 6 pupil, added:
“I really enjoyed watching the performances from the other schools.”

Headteacher praises the pupils

Headteacher Helen Ward said the event was a positive experience for the pupils and a chance to perform alongside other young musicians.

Helen said:
“It was fantastic to see our children take to the stage so confidently and work together to give such an impressive performance. We strive to give our pupils access to new and exciting opportunities like this where they can develop their creativity and engage with and celebrate other young people from across our local region. Very well done to all the young musicians who took part and made the event such an enjoyable experience for us all.”
