Oddfellows Friendship Groups Host March Gatherings in Redruth and Truro
Members of the Oddfellows Friendship Groups in Redruth and Truro have been enjoying a series of lively gatherings this March, bringing friendship, laughter and a touch of travel to their regular meetings.
The events, which also included members in Plymouth, offered a chance for people to come together socially while learning something new and enjoying refreshments.
Travels in Turkey Talk Captivates Members
A highlight of the recent gatherings was an illustrated talk titled Travels in Turkey.
The guest speaker guided members on a journey across the country’s coastline, mountains, towns and historic cities, ending in the bustling city of Istanbul. Sound recordings accompanied the slides, helping to bring the destinations vividly to life.
To round off the audio visual experience, members were also given a taste of Turkish Delight, offering a sweet reminder of the country’s famous treat.
The talk sparked plenty of questions and conversation, with laughter filling the room as members relaxed over refreshments including tea, coffee, chocolate biscuits, cake, fresh fruit and sweets.
Support and Activities for Members
Alongside the social activities, members also received a welfare update outlining the support available through the organisation.
This included information about member grants for dental and optical care, emergency financial assistance, a members’ advice line and access to legal support.
Members also heard about upcoming activities such as free chair yoga sessions and friendly lunch groups designed to bring people together and support wellbeing.
To finish the afternoons, members took part in raffles raising funds for local charities. Others browsed the free book club or picked up puzzle sheets to take home.
A Friendly Society Open to All
The Plymouth and Truro District of the Oddfellows says it is proud to be part of one of the UK’s oldest friendly societies, focused on enriching lives through friendship, care and community spirit.
Open to people of all ages and backgrounds, the society offers regular social gatherings and friendship groups across Redruth, Truro, Plymouth and surrounding areas.
Activities include lunches, organised trips, quizzes, presentations, talks, games, competitions and special events.
Membership also provides a range of benefits including welfare and care support, a members’ advice line, access to a travel club and organised holidays, opportunities to volunteer and raise funds for good causes, and the chance to build lasting friendships.
