Redruth Clocktower Found Unsafe After Structural Assessment
Redruth’s historic Clocktower has been found to have serious structural issues following a recent assessment, leaving the landmark unsafe to access and still out of action.
In an update posted yesterday, Redruth Town Council confirmed that the tower, which it owns, cannot currently be entered due to the condition of the structure. The council says it is now exploring funding options to help cover the cost of the repairs needed to restore the iconic clock.
The clock has already been silent for well over a year after the interior of the tower was deemed unsafe.
Structural Problems Identified
According to the council, the building has now been assessed and the findings revealed serious structural problems.
Redruth Town Council said:
“Following on from previous updates, the Clocktower which is owned by Redruth Town Council, has been assessed and has serious structural issues which mean that it is not safe to access.”
Because of this, work is now underway to find external funding to support the necessary repairs.
The council added:
“The Town Council are working hard to identify external funding opportunities to enable us to undertake the costly repairs which are needed. This will then enable this culturally significant and iconic clock to chime again.”
Clock Has Been Silent Since 2024
In an earlier update shared in October 2025, the council explained that Redruth Clock Tower had been out of action since November 2024.
At that time, the interior of the tower had already been deemed unsafe to enter, meaning the clock could not be wound.
The council previously said:
“Redruth Clock Tower has been out of action since November 2024, as the interior has been deemed to be unsafe to enter, and we haven’t been able to wind the clock since then.”
Plans were also being explored to install an automatic winder so the clock could operate without needing to be manually wound.
“We’re working hard to resolve the issues with the Tower, and also plan to install an automatic winder so that the clock can function again.”
Next Update Expected in Summer
For now, the tower remains closed while funding options and repair plans are explored.
Redruth Town Council says it will provide another update on the situation in early Summer.
