Charity says rising costs have forced ‘drastic but necessary’ decisions

The Monkey Sanctuary near Looe will remain closed to the public throughout the entire 2025 season, according to a statement released by the charity Wild Futures.

Citing ongoing financial strain and rising costs, the team behind the internationally respected sanctuary said they had made the “drastic but necessary” decision while they carry out a strategic assessment of their operations.

Focus remains on rescued monkeys

In a message shared on Facebook, Wild Futures said:

“Simply put, we cannot afford to open our doors to the public. As a true Sanctuary, the monkeys in our care will always come first, and we are dedicating our entire efforts to them during this challenging time.”

The sanctuary, based at Murrayton House in St Martin, is home to monkeys rescued from abuse and neglect. Known globally for its standards of care and primate welfare work, the site typically welcomes more than 30,000 visitors and students each year.

Supporters asked to stay connected

The charity, which receives no government funding, also reached out to regular supporters and adopters in their post:

“For any adopters or regular supporters who were hoping to come and see us this year, please do email us info@wildfutures.org.”

Supporters are encouraged to stay up to date via the sanctuary’s Facebook and Instagram pages, or by signing up to their monthly updates through their mailing list: www.wildfutures.org/join-our-mailing-list.

Overwhelmed by support

In a follow-up post, the team said they were “overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support” since the announcement and are grateful for the kindness shown during what they described as a “very difficult time for our charity.”

“We will update you on our next steps and the important ways you can help the monkeys as soon as we can.”

While the sanctuary remains closed to the public, Wild Futures continues its work to protect primates and habitats both in the UK and globally. They also support projects overseas and campaign for better protection of primates through government lobbying and education.
