Don’t Let Your Move Stress Out the Dog: 10 Pet-Friendly Tips for Moving Home in Cornwall
Barratt Homes shares advice to mark National Pet Month
Moving house can be stressful enough without having to worry about how your pet is coping – but with millions of households in the UK now owning cats, dogs or even reptiles, it’s something more people than ever need to consider.
With National Pet Month running until 1st May 2025, Cornish housebuilder Barratt Homes has issued a helpful guide to ensure your furry, feathered or scaly companions settle into their new surroundings with as little stress as possible.
A growing nation of pet lovers
Recent figures show that around 60% of British households owned non-aquatic pets in 2024, with 17.2 million homes caring for 36 million animals – including 3.5 million dogs and 12.5 million cats. That’s a rise on previous years, highlighting just how important pets have become in British homes.
Andrea Pilgrim, sales director for Barratt Homes, said:
“Moving home can be unsettling for pets, so keeping their routine as consistent as possible is key. Follow our advice to make the transition smoother and you’ll be enjoying your new home together in no time.”
Before the move…
-
Reassure your pet – Show extra attention and affection during packing. Keep them away from the busiest areas to reduce anxiety.
-
Keep familiar items close – Don’t box up their bedding and toys straight away – familiar smells can help them feel secure.
-
Plan ahead – If your pet is prone to travel sickness or stress, speak to your vet early. They may recommend calming techniques or medication.
During the move…
-
Transport safely – Use an appropriate carrier or harness. Cats should always be kept in a carrier, and dogs restrained safely. Provide water and take breaks for longer journeys. Maintain a stable temperature, especially for birds and exotic pets.
-
Create a safe space – Once you arrive, set up a quiet area with your pet’s bedding and toys to help them feel at home.
-
Let them explore slowly – Start them in one room and gradually introduce them to the rest of the house. Expect a few accidents while they settle.
After you’ve moved…
-
Cats need time – Many cats prefer a quiet hideaway at first. Choose a calm space to help them adjust.
-
Update their details – Make sure collars and microchips reflect your new address. Dogs must legally wear ID tags in public.
-
Secure your garden – Double check fences before letting dogs roam. Ensure they can’t dig under or leap over.
-
Ease into the routine – If you can, take a few days off to help your pet adjust. Use it as a chance to explore new local dog-walking spots and settle in together.
