Couple Reunite with Penlee RNLI Crew Who Rescued Their Dog Mac
Emotional reunion at Penlee Lifeboat Station
The volunteer crew at Penlee RNLI were reunited yesterday (16th June 2025) with Lewis and Lynne Clark, the couple whose dog Mac was dramatically rescued after falling into the sea between Mousehole and Lamorna nearly three years ago.
Back in September 2022, the crew of Penlee’s Atlantic 85 Inshore lifeboat Mollie and Ivor Dent raced to the aid of Mac, a collie dog who had ended up in the water and was visibly distressed, barking and swimming in and out of a cave.
Rescue effort remembered
At the helm was Will Treneer, with crew members Max Rowe and Jason Ward onboard. On reaching Mac, Max entered the water and swam to the struggling dog. With help from Jason, they carefully lifted Mac onboard the lifeboat.
Mac had suffered a number of serious injuries and needed two operations. He was cared for at Penmellyn Vets in St Columb for several weeks before he was well enough to travel home.
Lewis said:
“Please pass on our heartfelt thanks to all concerned for saving Mac’s life, especially the crew who rescued him, and for the care and compassion shown to us. Without their bravery we wouldn’t have Mac, we’ll always be thankful that there are people like yourselves in times of need. The photo of Max with Mac epitomises the bravery and compassion of the RNLI volunteers.”
A stick-loving survivor
Despite a limp, Mac made a good recovery and soon returned to his favourite habit of carrying sticks. Wherever he went, he’d emerge from bushes proudly dragging branches — sometimes as long as six feet.
A final goodbye
In a tragic turn, Mac was later diagnosed with cancer. Lewis and Lynne informed the lifeboat station that Mac had passed away on 26th July last year.
Today’s visit gave the couple a chance to reconnect with Max and Will, and to thank the crew again in person. They were shown around both Mollie and Ivor Dent and the all-weather lifeboat Ivan Ellen, while sharing memories of Mac’s rescue and recovery.
Now foster carers for dogs in need of homes, Lewis and Lynne continue to help animals who need a second chance.
The team at Penlee said it was lovely to see them again and wished them well in their fostering journey.
