Three Rescued After Vessel Loses Power Off Cornwall’s Southern Tip

The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat was called out for the third time in a week on Friday 20th June after a motor vessel broke down about one nautical mile south of Lizard Point.

The volunteer crew were paged at 1.21pm following reports of the vessel having no means of propulsion. Falmouth Coastguard requested assistance, and at 1.32pm, under the command of Coxswain Phil Woodcock, the lifeboat RNLB Rose launched on service. The lifeboat arrived on scene just seven minutes later at 1.39pm.

Vessel Unable to Sail to Safety

There were three people on board the stricken vessel. After a full assessment by the crew, it became clear the boat couldn’t make any meaningful progress under sail alone.

A decision was made by Phil to tow the vessel to the nearest safe port, which was Falmouth.

Lifeboat Returns Home After Successful Tow

The towline was attached, and the lifeboat reached Falmouth at 4.57pm. After safely securing the vessel, the crew returned to their station at Kilcobben Cove, arriving at 5.46pm. RNLB Rose was then rehoused, refuelled and made ready for the next service at 6.15pm.

This marks the third call-out in seven days for The Lizard RNLI team.
