Cornwall's Bank Holiday Warning: Are You Ready to Stay Safe?

With the late summer bank holiday approaching, NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly is reminding everyone to take simple steps to stay safe and healthy whether at the beach, enjoying a barbeque, or walking the coast path.

Cornwall's chief medical officer, Dr Chris Reid, said:

"We're all hoping to enjoy the bank holiday, but it's important to stay safe while you have fun. You can do this by getting prepared in advance and following our summer health tips, such as stocking up your first aid, making sure to have sun cream, packing a reusable water bottle and sun hat.

It's always a good idea to think about and check on elderly or younger members of the family, as they can become dehydrated more easily. Remind them to drink more and keep topping up on sun cream or avoid going out at the hottest part of the day.

If you need medical help, know where to go. Local pharmacies are your first port of call as they can offer expert advice for minor illnesses, helping you to get the right care quickly."

Sun Safety and Heat Risks

The NHS is urging people to use high-factor sunscreen and reapply regularly, even on cloudy days. Staying in the shade between 11am and 3pm, wearing a hat and sunglasses, and keeping hydrated with water rather than alcohol are all key steps.

Older adults, young children and those with health conditions are particularly at risk during extreme heat. Common signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps and heavy sweating. If these progress into heatstroke symptoms such as confusion, rapid breathing, or loss of consciousness, call 999 immediately.

Treating Sunburn

To ease sunburn, the NHS recommends cooling skin with a cold shower or damp cloth, drinking plenty of fluids, and applying aloe vera or after-sun lotion. Cover the affected area and avoid further exposure until it heals.

Do not apply petroleum jelly, butter, or ice directly, and avoid popping blisters or peeling skin, which can increase infection risk.

Insect Bites and Stings

Dr Chris Reid added:

"Most insect bites and stings are not serious and will improve within hours or days. Your local pharmacist can recommend treatments such as painkillers, creams and antihistamines to help relieve symptoms."

For minor reactions, wash the area with soap and water, apply a cold compress, and avoid scratching. For persistent swelling or itching, over-the-counter medicines can help.

Seek urgent help if swelling spreads, symptoms worsen, or if a severe allergic reaction occurs, such as wheezing, swelling of the face or throat, or loss of consciousness. In these cases, dial 999 immediately.

BBQ and Fire Safety

With many planning outdoor cooking, the NHS is reminding people to:

  • Only use BBQs outside in designated areas

  • Ensure they are fully extinguished before leaving

  • Dispose of coals and gas canisters safely

  • Keep children and pets away from hot surfaces

  • Never leave a BBQ unattended

Beach Safety: Respect the Water

Visitors are encouraged to choose lifeguarded beaches, swim between red and yellow flags, and avoid using inflatables in the sea.

If you get into difficulty in the water, remember to float to live: lie on your back, spread your arms and legs, and try to stay calm.

Staying Safe on Cornwall's Coast Path

The South West Coast Path offers stunning views but conditions can change quickly. Walkers are urged to:

  • Check the weather and tide times before setting off

  • Wear sturdy footwear for rocky paths

  • Stay on marked routes

  • Carry water, snacks, a phone, and a power bank

  • Keep dogs on leads near cliffs and livestock

  • Tell someone your plans and expected return time

  • Respect the environment by taking litter home

In emergencies on the path or beach, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

With the bank holiday just around the corner, the NHS says a little preparation can go a long way in keeping everyone safe while making the most of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly this summer.
