Stock Car & Banger Racing – Returns to St Day This Saturday
The World Championship for Stock Rods will be contested at the United Downs Raceway, St Day, this Saturday 27th September at 1pm, with a bumper entry of drivers from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Stock Rods – close, non-contact racing
Only once before has the World Championship for non-contact Stock Rods been raced in Cornwall. That was in 2022, when Cornish ace Callum Hosie of Newquay came within seven laps of victory, only to be cruelly robbed of success by a puncture.
Hosie, who is the reigning English Champion, was the race leader at the time of the unfortunate puncture, and his untimely demise opened the door for Scottish star David Philp Jnr to make a successful defence of the World title.
Although Philp Jnr has since retired, the Scottish influence on the World Championship remains strong. Current World title holder Cameron Doak of Carluke is one of five Scots heading to Cornwall. Lee Smart and teenager Lewis Dickson will be racing at St Day for the first time, while 2015 World Champion Michael Bethune of Glenrothes has previous experience of the track. However, it is Jamie Dawson of Balmedie who appears to be the main threat to a south west success.
Young racer Dawson has already captured the British, European and UK Championships this year, winning those titles in three different countries.
Dawson, Bethune and Hosie are assured of a place in the front six grid positions. Joining them will be Chris Mikulla of Weston Super Mare, who topped the English qualifying points chart, along with two Northern Irish contenders – Irish Champion Calyn Peoples of Carrickfergus and Samuel Montgomery of Limavady, who won the World title on his home circuit of Nutts Corner in 2023.
The race will run over 35 laps, with a strong Cornish contingent also set to compete. They include Simon Bassett of Bodmin, Matt Westaway of Par, Sean Gillett of Stithians, father and son pairing Simon and Aiden Vincent of United Downs, veteran racer Stephen Cock of Penryn, and teenager Christina Sillifant of Davidstow.

Formula Two Stock Cars – high speed, action-packed racing
The BriSCA F2 Stock Cars will race at St Day for the final time this season. The meeting will open with the White & Yellow Grade Series final, which offers £500 worth of new tyres for the top three finishers, plus enhanced prize money.
Stock Car racing in the UK operates to a handicap system, with higher graded drivers starting further back. The White & Yellow Grade Series final gives the lower graded drivers the chance to contest a significant event without the higher ranks involved.
James Lindsay of Saltash will be on pole position for the final.
The top prize of the day for the Formula Two Stock Cars is the coveted Old Motor Cycle Club Trophy, a silver cup dating back to the 1950s and valued at £100 when first purchased. Ryan Sheahan of Chard will defend the trophy he won last year, having also taken victory in 2019.
The St Day Track Championship also hangs in the balance. Former English Open Champion Ben Borthwick of Dobwalls leads Newton Abbot’s Jamie Avery by just three points, with Wadebridge youngster Charlie Lobb a further 22 points behind.

Bangers – last fixture before Cornish Championship
A large entry of Bangers will also line up for their final outing at the United Downs Raceway before the Cornish Championship in late October.
Teenager Alfie Tomkins of Roche has enjoyed the most wins this season, while reigning St Day Track Champion Phil Chapman of Redruth will be eager to bounce back after a rollover at the last meeting.
Other names to watch include entertainer Grant Harris of Penwithick and Nigel Belfield of Redruth, who has twice claimed feature final victories at St Day.
