Newquay Night Bus Helps Reduce Crime Reports Over Summer

A late-night bus service for partygoers in Newquay has been praised for helping to cut reports of antisocial behaviour and sexual offences by half during the summer months.

Over 740 Passengers Chose the Safer Way Home

Running from 24th May to 6th September, the Saturday night bus carried more than 740 passengers home safely. The service was set up by Devon & Cornwall Police and funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, with support from Cornwall Council, Cornwall Air Ambulance and Newquay BID. It was operated by First Bus.

The night bus was introduced to tackle drink driving offences, antisocial behaviour and violence against women and girls.

Police Praise the Service’s Impact

PS Dave Flynn said: “It is fantastic to see these reductions in reported crime and that the night bus has been a contributing factor in helping to make the nightlife in Newquay safer.

“I’m pleased that so many people were able to make use of the service and that it was able to prevent, deter and reduce crime. Thank you to the OPCC and our partners for their support.”

Inspector Steve Johnson, who heads up the neighbourhood police teams in the area, added: “The bus has been a great addition to the busy weekends in Newquay over Summer, complimenting the high-visibility patrols our officers carry out at peak times to deter opportunist offenders whilst also providing a reassurance to those enjoying their night out.

“It’s encouraging to see that all of these factors have contributed to the reduction in reports.”

Funding Support and Community Impact

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez said: “The reason my office funds the night buses is to achieve greater safety and a reduction in ASB. To achieve this level of success already is exactly what our community needs to hear.

“Enjoying a night out shouldn’t come at a cost of being a victim or witness of crime or disorder. We all want a safe and thriving evening and night time economy.”

The night bus has now completed its second successful year of operation in Newquay.

Anyone who used the service this year is encouraged to complete a short feedback survey to help improve future services in 2026: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=xdAVRRi0-kyXQSItpooY1x7AfvLQCm1Emq3QYhdFUqlUOUk4OFIyOVVUWlVOSEdWTFFOSTJUV0Y0UC4u
