Shocking Rise in Battery Fires Across Cornwall Sparks Safety Warning

Published On: 24 October 2025Last Updated: 24 October 2025By

The number of fires started by batteries across Cornwall has risen sharply, with a 70% increase over the past three years, according to new data obtained through Freedom of Information requests.

70% Increase in Three Years

The figures, released by Personal Injury Claims UK, reveal that there were 17 battery-related fires recorded in Cornwall in the year to March 2025. That’s one more than the previous year and up from 10 in 2022/23.

In total, there have been 43 battery ignition fires across the county since April 2022, although thankfully no injuries were reported.

The data also found that while Cornwall’s figures remain lower than many other regions, the county has still seen a marked increase, reflecting a national trend.

St Austell and Newquay Identified as Hotspots

St Austell and Newquay recorded the highest number of battery fires in Cornwall, each with four incidents. They were followed by Truro, Penzance, Penryn, Mylor Bridge and Falmouth, which each had two.

The fires were linked to a range of locations, with dwellings accounting for the majority of incidents (13), followed by road vehicles (11) and business premises (5). Other reported locations included private garden sheds (3), garages (2), and single incidents involving a caravan, boat, school and outdoor structures.

Batteries Becoming a Growing Hazard

Lithium-ion batteries are now common in everything from phones and laptops to vapes and electric vehicles. While generally safe when used correctly, they can become hazardous if over-charged, short-circuited, damaged or exposed to water.

Patrick Mallon from Personal Injury Claims UK said: “We’ve seen a significant rise in battery fires in recent years across England and Wales, reflecting the growing presence of batteries in everyday life. From household devices to electric vehicles, it’s vital that people understand the potential risks and handle batteries with care.

“These fires have the potential to cause really serious injuries, so it’s important everyone is fully aware of how to use these batteries safely and manufacturers and workplaces are aware of their responsibilities to consumers, too. If you suffer an injury through no fault of your own, however, you could hold the manufacturer to account by pursuing a compensation claim.”

Personal Injury Claims UK connects individuals with personal injury specialists experienced in dealing with cases involving defective products and faulty batteries. Their 24/7 phone service and live chat feature are both free to use.
