Japanese Clay Workshop Introduces Pool Academy Students to Kanji Ceramics

GCSE art students at Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, have been exploring Japanese pottery traditions through a practical clay workshop led by one of Cornwall’s best-known ceramic institutions.

Kanji carving workshop at the heart of learning

The Year 10 students took part in a hands-on session led by Neil Robinson from Leach Pottery. During the workshop, students carved their initials into clay using Kanji, the traditional Japanese writing system.

The session combined practical ceramic skills with cultural learning and the work created will contribute directly to the students’ GCSE coursework.

New three-year partnership begins

The workshop marked the first activity in a new three-year partnership between Pool Academy and Leach Pottery in St Ives. Through the partnership, students will have opportunities to explore both traditional and modern ceramics, guided by professional artists and practitioners.

Ceramics studio development underway

As part of wider efforts to place ceramics at the centre of the school’s art curriculum, professional graphic designer and ceramic artist Lynda Southworth began her Artist in Residency placement earlier this term. She has been supporting the development of Pool Academy’s new ceramics studio, delivering demonstrations and working on collaborative projects with students.

Art-focused visit to St Ives

The Japanese clay workshop formed part of a busy week of art activity. Students also visited St Ives, starting with a drawing workshop at the Barbara Hepworth Museum, followed by time in the School of Painting studios. The visit finished at the Tate Gallery, where students viewed artworks they have been studying in class.

Leach Pottery restoration plans

Founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Shōji Hamada, Leach Pottery is preparing for a major restoration. Plans include a new gallery displaying important works from collections including the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

A new learning and production centre is set to open in early 2026, allowing visitors to follow the pottery process from raw clay through to finished pieces. The redevelopment will also include improved facilities for workshops, visiting artists and public programmes.

Principal welcomes the partnership

Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, said:

“It’s so exciting to see this partnership with Leach Pottery come to life. Our students are gaining unique insights into the art of ceramics, exploring creativity, culture, and craftsmanship in ways that will really enhance their learning. And this is just the start.”
