South West Water Explains How Water Meters Can Affect Household Bills
Could a Free Water Meter Cut Your Bills in the South West?
As households across the South West look for ways to manage costs and reduce water use, South West Water is encouraging customers to consider installing a free water meter.
The company says a meter can help people understand exactly how much water they use, reduce unnecessary waste and potentially save money on their bills. South West Water offers expert advice, free installation where eligible and billing support, with meters fitted either inside or outside the home depending on the property and its location.
How water meters work
Water meters measure the volume of water used by a household, meaning customers are charged only for what they use. This gives bill-payers more control and visibility over their usage.
According to South West Water, around 95% of customers see their bills reduce after switching to a metered supply. The company says this is because people become more aware of their water use and can apply water-saving tips more easily.
Other benefits highlighted include faster identification of leaks, access to affordability tariffs and a range of free water-saving devices.
Water meters are already in use in more than 83% of South West Water customer properties. Because they measure all water flowing into a home, they can help spot hidden leaks if usage is recorded when no water should be in use.
What if a meter does not save money?
South West Water offers a Lowest Bill Guarantee, which means customers will not pay more on a metered bill than they did on their previous unmeasured charges for the first two years.
This period allows households time to adjust their water use. If a customer’s bill does increase after a meter is installed, they have up to two years to switch back to unmetered charges.
Who can apply for a water meter?
Water meters are not limited to homeowners. Tenants with a contract of six months or more can also be considered.
If a customer is eligible, installation is free and usually takes place within a few months of applying. In cases where a meter cannot be fitted due to pipework layout or location, South West Water may offer an Assessed Charge instead. This is calculated based on the number of people living in the household.
