Would You Dump a Date If Your Dog Didn’t Approve?

A new survey suggests dogs are playing a growing role in modern dating across the South West, with canine compatibility now influencing who people choose to pursue a relationship with ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Research commissioned by Tug-E-Nuff found that for four in ten people in the South West, it is important that a romantic partner likes dogs. For half of those surveyed, it goes further, with their partner needing to get along with their dog specifically.

When a dog becomes the deal-breaker

The findings show just how high the stakes can be. One in ten people admitted they have been turned off or even ended a relationship because their dog did not like the person they were dating.

The results point to dogs acting as emotional gatekeepers in romantic relationships, with singles increasingly judging potential partners by how they interact with their four-legged family members.

Play and bonding

Tug-E-Nuff says this is something it sees reflected in everyday dog ownership, noting that interactive play can help dogs, owners and partners bond more easily.

“For dogs, play isn’t a luxury; it’s how they bond, communicate and build trust,” said Tug-E-Nuff owner and dog play expert Danny Nelis-Rouse.
“Interactive games like tug can be one of the simplest ways for a partner to build a positive relationship with a dog – and when couples learn to play together, it can help strengthen not just the human-dog bond, but the relationship between each other too.”

With Valentine’s Day approaching, the company says winning over a partner’s pet could be just as important as impressing friends or family.

Dating profiles and favourite breeds

The survey also found that nearly a third of people in the South West are more likely to swipe right on a dating profile that includes a photograph of a dog.

Golden Retrievers came out on top, with almost a third saying they would most like a potential partner to own one. Labradors followed, then Border Collies and Spring Spaniels, with Cockapoos completing the top five.

People also associate dog lovers or owners with positive traits, with many believing they are more likely to be caring, responsible and affectionate, qualities often sought in a romantic partner.
