Cornwall set for 34°C heat as hot spell builds this week

If you have outdoor plans over the next few days, the timing could not be much better. The South West forecast points to a run of hot, dry weather, with temperatures reaching 34°C by Thursday and clear skies holding into the weekend.

The one catch comes in the early mornings, when mist and fog form before burning off.

How the week shapes up

Wednesday and into the night

Any morning fog patches should clear quickly to leave a fine, sunny day across the region. Winds stay light, so it will feel very warm or hot in the strong July sun. The coast stays cooler. The top temperature is around 32°C.

Through the evening there is plenty more sunshine, and skies stay clear overnight. Mist and fog patches form again in the early hours, with a low of 12°C.

Thursday

More of the same, only hotter. Morning mist and fog clear quickly to leave a fine, very warm and locally hot day with plenty of sunshine. Winds stay light throughout, and the coast again holds onto cooler air. The maximum climbs to 34°C.

Friday to Sunday

High pressure keeps things dry and settled into the weekend. Expect plenty of sunshine and hot conditions by day. Low cloud and fog form overnight but clear quickly each morning.

The coast keeps its edge

Wherever you are inland, the forecast is clear that coastal spots stay cooler right through the hot spell. If you want to take the edge off the heat, the sea air is where to find it.

What to keep in mind

Strong July sun and light winds are a combination that catches people out. Keep water close, take breaks in the shade, and go easy through the hottest part of the day.

Early risers and anyone on the roads before the sun clears should watch for those mist and fog patches, which form overnight and linger into the early hours before lifting.

The pattern shows no sign of breaking before Sunday, with each night bringing a little low cloud and fog that clears again by morning.
