A394 overnight closures roll from Penzance to Falmouth

If you drive the A394 after dark this September, expect company. Cornwall Council has confirmed a month of overnight closures on the road between Longrock and Treliever, as routine highway maintenance works its way along the route in stages, town by town, through the small hours.

When and where it’s happening

The work is being carried out by Cormac between 7pm and 6am, when traffic is at its lightest, and moves along the road in four phases so no one stretch is closed for longer than necessary:

• Monday 7 to Thursday 10 September – Penzance to Ashton
• Monday 14 to Sunday 20 September – Ashton to Helston
• Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September – Helston to Rame
• Monday 28 September to Thursday 1 October – Rame to Falmouth

What the work involves

The programme covers minor repairs, gully emptying, sign cleaning, and verge and hedge cutting, all part of keeping the road in a safe, serviceable state. Crews are working nights specifically to keep disruption off the road at its busiest times, and are phasing the closures locality by locality to keep each one as short as possible.

Bus services will still get through the closed sections while work is under way, travelling slowly to keep the working area safe for the crews.

Diversions and getting through

Signs will go up at major junctions ahead of each closure, directing through-traffic onto a marked diversion. Cornwall Council says diversion routes have to use roads of the same standard or higher, so some of them run longer than the direct route, purely for safety reasons. Pedestrian access stays open throughout.

The dates are correct at the time of writing but could shift, especially if the weather turns, and advance notice boards on site will be updated where possible. Helston Town Council, whose patch sits roughly in the middle of the affected stretch, shared the notice to flag the disruption to residents ahead of time.
