What Hannah and Alex did to earn a seat on Fowey’s fire engine

The next time the pagers go off in Fowey, two more people will be running for the fire engine.

Months of training, then a week of tests

Hannah and Alex have both passed their Approved to Ride (ATR) course, Fowey Community Fire Station has announced.

It did not come quickly. The station says the pair put in months of learning and training at the Fowey station, followed by an intensive week of assessments.

The course took in pumps and water management, ladders, working at height and road traffic collision rescues. In the station’s words, they “tackled every challenge thrown their way”.

From trainees to Development Firefighters

Passing the course means Hannah and Alex step up from trainees to Development Firefighters. And that changes what happens when a call comes in.

“That means when the pager sounds and the bells go down, they’ll be climbing aboard the appliance and heading out with their crew to help protect our local community,” the station said.

‘We couldn’t be prouder’

The crew shared the news with a call for people to show the pair “some Fowey love”.

“Becoming a firefighter takes commitment, determination, sacrifice and plenty of hard work,” the station said. “Alex and Hannah have shown all of that and more, and we couldn’t be prouder to welcome them to the next stage of their firefighting journey.”

The message to the two of them finished: “Stay safe, look after each other, and here’s to the adventures ahead.”
