Porthleven’s Bank Holiday torchlight procession called off
Hundreds of people usually gather in Porthleven on the August Bank Holiday to walk the harbour wall by torchlight, a warm orange line snaking out towards the clock tower as darkness falls. This year the torches are staying unlit.

Why the procession has been called off
Porthleven Town Council has cancelled this year’s Torchlight Procession, which had been planned for Bank Holiday Monday. The decision follows the government’s current restrictions and advice on the use of open flames, alongside what the council describes as a significant risk of wildfires.
With hundreds of people expected to walk the wall each carrying a lit torch, the council said it would not be responsible to go ahead.
What the council is saying
In a statement, the council said it appreciated how disappointing the news would be, “particularly for families and those who look forward to this much-loved Porthleven tradition each year,” adding that it had “very much hoped to see the procession take place.”
It said the decision came down to a simple priority. “The safety of residents, visitors, volunteers and our surrounding environment must come first.”
The council thanked everyone who has supported the procession over the years, “and especially those who have volunteered.”
What happens next
No date or detail has been given for the government restrictions referenced in the announcement. The council said it hopes to bring the Torchlight Procession back next year “when conditions allow,” and thanked the town for its understanding in the meantime.
