Fowey RNLI Assists Boat Taking on Water Near Porthpean
On Tuesday 26th August at 9:14am, Fowey RNLI was tasked by Falmouth Coastguard to assist a 9m vessel with two people onboard after it was reported to be taking on water near Porthpean.
Rapid Response from Fowey RNLI
Fowey’s volunteer shore crew immediately loaded the salvage pump onto the Atlantic 85 lifeboat and prepared her for launch. At 9:25am the lifeboat was launched with four crew under helm Jan Philp.
The crew made best speed to the location, reaching the stranded boat off Crinnis Beach at 9:35am.
Boat Strikes Rocks
The vessel, a 9m survey boat, had apparently struck rocks and was taking on water, though onboard pumps were controlling the situation. Crew members Will Maher and Ross Jezard transferred to the casualty vessel to assess the damage, with the lifeboat’s salvage pump taken onboard.
Escorted Back to Fowey
It was decided the safest option was for the lifeboat to escort the vessel back to Fowey as quickly as possible. On arrival, an immediate lift out at Polruan was arranged so the extent of the damage could be inspected.
Once the vessel was lifted clear of the water, Fowey Lifeboat was stood down and returned to station.
