Hayle Runners Record Strong Results at Newquay 10K
After a strong opening to the Cornish GP season, Hayle Runners followed it up with an eye catching performance at the Newquay 10K on 1st February.
A total of 70 runners from the club lined up for the second race in the Cornish GP, with wet weather, puddles and potholes adding to the challenge on the tarmac.
Men’s Team Claim Silver
Hayle’s men secured second place overall in the team competition, underlining the club’s strong start to the season. The scoring team was made up of Sam Farmer, who also finished fifth overall, alongside Jacob Gardner, Jordan Morant, Neil Hayhurst, Ross Reilly and Jack Newman.
Age Group Success Across the Board
Nine age category prizes were collected by Hayle runners on what is described as a fairly flat course, apart from a Cornish lane climb in the opening mile.
Charlotte Bennett won gold in the 50 to 54 category, Margaret Clark finished second in the 65 to 69 group, and Diane Warren took first place in the 70 to 74 category.
Sam Farmer added third place in the 20 to 34 age group, Neil Hayhurst claimed silver in the 45 to 49 category, and Ian Curnow picked up bronze in the 55 to 59 group.
There were also first place finishes for Steve Wherry in the 60 to 64 category, Jon Eldon in the 65 to 69 group, Chunky Penhaul in the 75 to 79 category, and Stewart Townend in the 80 plus age group.
Junior Effort and Personal Bests
Junior runner Alfie Cuthbert, only just old enough to compete over 10 kilometres, recorded a time of 45:50 to finish fifth in the under 20s category.
Alongside the podium finishes, Hayle Runners recorded 18 personal bests on the day. Notable improvements included Andrew Heather taking 4 minutes and 54 seconds off last year’s time, Sam Kearney recording a two minute PB, and Deb Sturges, Amy Greef, Ruby King and Paul Warmington all setting new bests. Anne Cobell posted one of the biggest improvements, cutting 12 minutes off her previous course time.
Club chairman Richard Collett said the event was made tougher by the conditions, praised the work of the marshals, and thanked Newquay Road Runners for hosting the race.
The Green Army will next head to Looe for the third race of the Cornish GP season.
