Cornwall face Devon at Werrington with top spot on the line

Cornwall have already booked their place. A double over Herefordshire two weeks ago put them into the Super 12s stage of the National Counties T20, and Group Four is the only one of the four groups where all three qualifiers are settled. So Sunday at Werrington is about something else. It decides who finishes top, and the team that ends up first gets to host one of the four Super 12s mini tournaments.

What Sunday decides

Cornwall meet Devon at Werrington and either side can top Group Four by winning. The prize for finishing first is a home Super 12s tournament, with the four mini events each staged by a group winner.

There is a way for both to miss out, though. If Cornwall and Devon take points off each other across the double-header, Wiltshire can climb above them. Wiltshire host winless Herefordshire at Westbury on the same day.

The Cornwall side

Cornwall have added Ryan Tonkin, Ellis Whiteford and Alfie MacDonald to the team that beat Herefordshire twice a fortnight ago. Two of those three were making a mark against Somerset only two days before this one.

Friday’s 50-over showcase at Wadebridge ended in a 100-run defeat, but it handed two of Cornwall’s Sunday squad a stage.

Camborne batter Alfie MacDonald, Cornwall’s acting captain, finished 107 not out. He was 76 when the ninth wicket fell, and the hundred looked a long shot with only Ben Ellis left for company. Ben, a seamer from Callington, faced 27 balls before he got off the mark, holding up one end so Alfie could reach three figures. Once the century was up, Ben cut loose with three big sixes in an unbeaten 29. Their last-wicket stand was worth 62 in 11 overs and carried Cornwall through their full 50.

Ben had already done damage with the ball. He took four for 40 to check Somerset after Will Smeed had entertained a large crowd with 130 from 96 balls, including 11 fours and five sixes. Will Smeed put on 196 in 26 overs with Archie Vaughan, who made 88, and at one stage Cornwall looked set to chase something north of 350. Then Ben and new-ball partner Ryan Tonkin, who took three for 53, pulled it back. Somerset’s last eight wickets fell in the closing 10 overs and they finished on 319. Cornwall replied with 219 for 9.

What Devon bring across the Tamar

Devon hand a debut to Thorverton seamer George Daldorph for the cross-Tamar matches and have Gloucestershire Academy all-rounder James Matravers available. Craig Penberthy is out with a wrist injury and Sam Read has an ankle problem.

There is a change of leadership too. Callum Harvey is unavailable, so Lawrence Walker takes the captaincy and Championship captain James Horler returns for his first T20 appearance in two years.
