Helston car park charges: the petition with a September deadline
The QR codes have started appearing on signs around town, pointing at a single web page. Behind them is a campaign that wants 5,000 names before Cornwall Council meets in September, and a clear line about how not to make the point.

What the petition asks for
A petition has been set up asking Cornwall Council to reconsider its decision to bring in parking charges at the Fairground Car Park in Helston. The organisers want the issue brought before Full Council for what they describe as an open and transparent debate, giving residents, businesses and Cornwall councillors the chance to speak.
Helston Town Council has restated its own position in sharing the petition. The town council previously decided not to support charging at the Fairground Car Park, and it says that remains its view. It has said it hopes Cornwall Council will review the decision.
Why 5,000 is the number
Under Cornwall Council’s own petition scheme, a petition that reaches 5,000 signatures and relates to a Cornwall-wide issue can be considered for debate at a Full Council meeting. The organisers are hoping to hit that target in time for the matter to be looked at in September, which is why they describe the window as a limited one. They note that a previous petition came close without quite getting there.
The concerns being raised
The people behind the campaign say the charges are already having an effect. They report local businesses seeing reduced footfall, residents facing more parking pressure on surrounding streets, and difficulty for some people, including those with health challenges or mobility issues, in reaching the area. Their argument is that the impact is happening now and that the community should not have to wait months for the matter to be discussed in public.
Cornwall Council has said it will review the situation.

A line on vandalism
The organisers have been direct about one thing. They say damaging ticket machines or council property is not the answer and only distracts from the real issue, and they frame the campaign as one about standing together and making the case through democratic means. Their words: “This campaign is about standing together, making our voices heard through democratic means and showing Cornwall Council the strength of public feeling.”
How to add your name
You do not have to live in Helston to sign, and you do not have to use the car park every day. The organisers say it applies to anyone who shops, works, visits family or friends, attends events or supports businesses in the town. You can read or sign the petition on the Help us protect Helston Fairground Car Park page.
Anyone who has been affected is being asked to send their experiences, concerns or evidence to [email protected], whether that is fewer customers, trouble parking or displaced parking on nearby streets. One practical note from the organisers: after signing, you need to confirm your email to finalise your signature.
