Sustainability Steps Light the Way at Launceston College

Launceston College is making big changes behind the scenes to help the planet – and it could be just the beginning. The college, part of the Athena Learning Trust, is cutting its carbon footprint with a major switch to energy-efficient LED lighting and the introduction of electric vehicle support on campus.

The college has begun replacing all halogen bulbs with LEDs across the site. This upgrade is expected to significantly cut down on energy use and help reduce environmental impact.

Supporting Electric Transport

In a move to back eco-friendly travel, Launceston College has installed two electric vehicle (EV) chargers on-site, with more planned in the near future. There’s also a new electric vehicle in use at the college, showing a strong push towards sustainable transport options.

These projects have been overseen by the Athena Learning Trust Estates Department, who are rolling out a wider sustainability plan across all schools in the Trust. Their approach focuses on decarbonisation, resource efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Leading by Example

Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, said:

“We are incredibly excited about these steps toward a more sustainable future for Launceston College. Switching to LED lighting and adding electric vehicle chargers are just the beginning. We want to ensure that we are setting a positive example for our students and the wider community. These efforts reflect our commitment to not only educating the leaders of tomorrow but also to helping preserve the planet they will inherit. Together, we are lighting the way to a greener, more sustainable future.”

Strong Educational Standards

Launceston College is rated Good by Ofsted across key areas including Quality of education, Behaviour and attitudes, Personal development, Leadership and management, and Sixth form provision.

Inspectors noted that all pupils, including those with SEND, follow a broad and ambitious curriculum. Students in the sixth form study for qualifications that are well matched to their future aspirations, and their work is suitably demanding. Those in specially resourced provisions are taught in a way that meets their specific needs and capabilities.
