Redruth Town of Culture Campaign Releases New Film and Poem

A Film, A Poem and Redruth’s Story: What’s Happening on St Piran’s Day?

A new film featuring a creative work by theatre-maker Will Coleman is set to be released as part of Redruth’s Town of Culture campaign, reflecting on the town’s landscape, history and cultural inheritance.

The film presents a single authored creative response described as a piece of art in its own right. Through poetry and performance, it places Redruth’s present moment within a longer lineage of making and performance while drawing on themes including mining, migration, language and theatre.

The work is hosted on Redruth’s Town of Culture 2028 Instagram account, Town of Culture.

A Creative Voice Rooted in Cornwall

Will Coleman is a theatre-maker, author, musician and educational consultant. He previously worked as a director and musician with Kneehigh Theatre and is the founder of Golden Tree Productions.

In 2016, Will created the Man Engine, a 40 foot mechanical puppet built to mark Cornwall’s mining history and diaspora. The touring spectacle brought national attention to Cornwall’s UNESCO World Heritage status.

His work continues to focus on Cornish culture, language and landscape through large scale projects such as Kerdroya and through the Go Cornish programme in primary schools.

The latest commission forms part of that wider body of work connected to Redruth’s Town of Culture campaign.

A Cultural Statement for Redruth

The campaign is led by Redruth Town Council, Redruth Cultural Consortium and The Ladder, and proposes a £3.5 million cultural programme for Spring and Summer 2028 if the bid is successful.

Joshua Nawras of The Ladder, who are partnered with Redruth Town Council on the 2028 bid, said:

“We wanted the final word in this phase of the bid to come from an artist rooted in Cornwall. This film is a cultural statement. It speaks to where Redruth comes from and why that story matters now.”

The film also marks the final public moment in the current phase of the Town of Culture campaign.

The film will be screened on St Piran’s Day, 5th March, at the Regal Cinema in Redruth before a range of scheduled showings:
