Cornish Pirates Secure First US Investment in English Pro Rugby
Something has just happened in Penzance that has never happened before in English professional rugby.
The Cornish Pirates have secured investment from two American businessmen, in what is believed to be the first direct US investment into an English professional rugby club. The money comes from J. Kenneth (“Kenn”) Moritz and John H. Tippins, principals of Stonewood Capital Management, a Pittsburgh-based investment firm.
The announcement, made on 7th May 2026, lands days before the club’s biggest game of the season.

A First for the English Game
No US investor has previously taken a direct stake in an English professional rugby club, making this a genuine landmark moment for the sport. Pittsburgh has form when it comes to professional sport, with a deep portfolio of franchises across the city, and it is currently in the running to host matches at the 2031 Rugby World Cup in the United States.
That timing matters. With the global game heading towards a US-hosted World Cup, interest from American backers in English rugby looks likely to grow, and the Pirates have got there first.
What CEO Sally Pettipher Said
Sally Pettipher, chief executive of the Cornish Pirates, called it a significant moment for the club.
“This is a hugely significant moment for Cornish Pirates. To attract investment from experienced US investors of this calibre is a powerful endorsement of our strategy, our people and our long-term vision to build real value, both financial and social,” she said.
The Ten-Year Plan
The investment links directly to the club’s ten-year roadmap. That plan covers expanding commercial and international partnerships, setting up a Cornish Pirates Academy to develop local talent, and putting the building blocks in place to become a Premiership club.
It is an ambitious set of goals for a club currently sitting in the second tier, and one that will need backing of exactly this kind to be realistic.

Why Pittsburgh, Why Cornwall
Kenn was clear about what attracted him and his business partner to a club tucked away on the tip of Cornwall.
“We see a compelling opportunity in Cornish Pirates, a club with a proud history, a passionate community and a clear strategic plan for growth. Rugby is entering an exciting global phase, and we believe this investment places us at the heart of that journey,” he said.
John drew a line between the two places.
“Coming from Pittsburgh, we understand the power of sport to unite communities and drive economic growth. Cornwall has that same passion, and we are excited to support the Pirates as they build something truly special,” he added.
Stonewood Capital Management specialises in strategic growth investments across multiple sectors, with a focus on long-term value and partnership-led development.
A Big Weekend Ahead
All of this lands at a pivotal moment on the pitch. This weekend the Pirates travel to Hartpury RFC near Gloucester for a sixth versus seventh decider, with the final spot in the Champ League playoffs on the line.
Win, and they are in the playoffs. Lose, and the season ends there.
The Cornish Pirates are based in Penzance and compete in the second division Champ League.
