Work Begins on Southgate Arch Repairs in Launceston

Work has officially begun on the Southgate Arch in Launceston, with scaffolding set to be installed over the coming weeks as part of planned repair works.

Launceston Town Council confirmed in a post shared on Monday 30th March that the project is now underway, marking the start of essential maintenance on the historic structure.

What Work Is Taking Place?

The works will involve external repairs across the entire arch, including the roof. Scaffolding will be erected first, with the main repair work following shortly after.

Due to the historical importance of the Southgate Arch, the project is being carefully overseen to ensure all work meets the correct specifications.

No Road Closures Expected

Despite the scale of the work, there will be no road closures in place. The pedestrian walkway will also remain open, allowing people to continue using the area while repairs are carried out.

Partnership and Funding Behind the Project

The work is being carried out by Launceston Town Council in partnership with Historic England. Funding for the repairs has been provided by the UK Government and Historic England.

Historic England is also involved in ensuring the work is completed to the appropriate standards, recognising the building’s historical significance.

When Will It Be Finished?

The council expects the work to be completed around the end of June or the beginning of July.

Residents and visitors are being thanked for their patience while the maintenance is carried out.
