Free talk in Mevagissey to explore Cornwall’s hidden seagrass

Walk along the harbour at Mevagissey and you would never guess what is growing just offshore. Out in St Austell Bay, hidden beneath the surface, lies more than 350 hectares of seagrass, one of the largest meadows of its kind anywhere in the UK. Later this month, the charity behind its protection is coming to Mevagissey to explain exactly what is down there.

What is growing beneath St Austell Bay

The talk is being run by the Ocean Conservation Trust, the marine charity that leads seagrass conservation work around the county through its Blue Meadows project. The evening will explore the species that call the meadow home, why the habitat matters for both people and nature, and the work being done across Cornwall to protect and restore it.

The event is also being promoted by the Looe Marine Conservation Group, which has run its own seagrass exploration days further along the coast at Looe.

A free evening at Mevagissey Activity Centre

The talk runs from 7pm to 8pm on Thursday 27 August at Mevagissey Activity Centre, and it is completely free to attend. Organisers are encouraging people to bring a friend along and find out more about a habitat that sits right on Cornwall’s doorstep, largely unseen.

As the Ocean Conservation Trust put it in its own invitation: “We’d love to sea you there.”
