Superb Win for the ‘Ams’

Pirates Amateurs 50 – Plymstock Albion Oaks 3

This was an incredible result for the Pirates Amateurs, against a team who arrived at the Mennaye Field not just unbeaten, but also with five bonus point wins out of five in Counties 1 Tribute Western West this season.

Pirates Amateurs’ chairman Jack Nicholas presents the ‘Cape Cornwall Rum’ man of the match award to Sam Carter.

On a day perfect for playing good open rugby, the focused Pirates did just that, and scored seven tries in the match through Ted Hocking, Toby Osborne, Archie Pilcher, Sam Carter, Morgan Holman, and Ben Wragg (2), who also kicked six conversions and a penalty to amass a personal 25 points haul. Terrific!

Played on an afternoon following a well-attended past players and sponsors lunch, the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the game. Every player contributed, with wing John Tyler, despite not getting on the scoresheet, playing particularly well, and scrum half Sam Carter named man of the match. For the visitors, their lone three points came from a penalty goal kicked by former Cornwall and Devon player Lewis Paterson.

Speaking after the game Pirates Amateurs’ head coach Murray Westren commented:

“Played on such a fine day, and in front of a crowd that included our loyal sponsors and former players, this was a superb result for the boys.

“Our opponents are a very difficult side to beat, as their record proves, but on the day, and despite them still being competitive, they just couldn’t break us down.

“All in our team and indeed everyone in the playing squad, whether featuring or not this weekend, played their part, as such an outcome starts with the work everyone puts in on the training field.”
